Today, I had the most amazing encounter with God's creation. My people have a very important relationship with beluga whales. For centuries, probably milennia, we have harvested beluga whales. We relied upon them for high-calorie food to get us through harsh winters. When we hunt(ed) them, we did so with great respect and admiration for their prowess and sacrifice to us. One of the misguided things well-meaining missionaries did during and after colonization was attempt to expunge all Native beliefs and values. I believe these values and beliefs find great meaning within the context of the Christian Faith. In much the same way Paul appealed to the Athenians' beliefs, I believe it is important to recognize God has provided for all peoples of the world in unique and powerful ways. After all, many ancient European beliefs can be seen in the way they were adapted/redeemed in modern worship. I felt a strong kinship with these animals in this moment. I felt the finger of God, who created and cares for such amazing creatures.
